Carmela Niro:

Occupation: midwife: (levatrice, osterica) very important position within the community. She was held in high esteem similar to the village doctor.

She was all business and had no patience for her wild son, Joseph A. Di Sarro.

She use to tie him to the bed when she went to work delivering babies. He ran away and lived in the mountains. Then when he was 14 years old he ran away to Brazil looking for his father.

Her husband, Angelo Di Sarro, died when he came home drunk one night and hit his head on the stone steps at the doorway.

Her son, Joseph Di Sarro felt his mother should have looked out for her husband.

She taught her skills and trade to her eldest daughter, Teresa Di Sarro.

Teresa Di Sarro became very wealthy in America.
